7. Relief in the memory of Wilhelm Finnberg, 1984

On 4th of September 1827 Finland’s biggest city, the city of Turku was reduced to ashes to 75% by a great fire. This fire inspired Wilhelm Finnberg’s most famous painting, the Great Fire of Turku. Tragically it was this fire that destroyed his atelier and most of his works.

Wilhelm Finnberg (1784-1833) was born in Pargas and managed to get an education in the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts disregarding his origin from a poor family. The relief in the memory of Finnberg was made in 1984 by the sculptor Johannes Hänninen.
